Random Sports Observations from 2009 (from what I can remember)

Greetings to all. Here are some random sports observations from 2009 from your basic dad/high school teacher/former basketball coach/sports fan in suburban Atlanta, GA:

The Super Bowl between Arizona and Pittsburgh was the most exciting I can remember in my lifetime.

I coached high school basketball for 13 years and I do not recognize the game played by the National Basketball Association.

The men's college game is rapidly approaching the NBA. When I want to see basketball played at its best, I watch the UConn women's team.

That said, Maya Moore, when all is said and done (and barring a serious injury), will be recognized as the best women's player of all time. You may even see her try out for an NBA team.

The NCAA men's basketball tournament is still the most exciting event in sports.

The Atlanta Braves are no longer a player in major league baseball.

When it was crunch time last season, the Braves folded like a house of cards. The streak that occurred in September only happened because it was already essentially mop-up time.

I wasn't thrilled to see A-Rod get a ring, but he did make the difference on that Yankee team this year.

Maurice Jones-Drew taking a knee on the goal line in the Jacksonville game this NFL season was absolutely the right thing to do to win the game.

Belichick and Tomlin both make very risky calls in games this season. Tomlin's turns out OK - minimal criticism. Belichick's doesn't turn out OK - he gets roasted. That was the only difference between the two decisions.

On my death bed I will reflect on how much I enjoyed watching Peyton Manning play the quarterback position.

Four STRAIGHT championships for Jimmie Johnson - VERY impressive.

Tiger Woods is going to be a miserable human being in the near future. The media microscope now on him from the result of his own bad decisions is going to drive him crazy. It will be interesting to see how he handles it.

Coach Paul Johnson is the best thing to happen to Georgia Tech football since Bobby Ross. They seem to me to be very similar people and coaches.

Until Georgia instills some firmer discipline in its football program, I do not see them reaching the elite status currently held by Florida and Alabama. There will be too may ups and downs.

Looking at the Atlanta Falcons schedule at the beginning of the year and seeing the key injuries they have incurred, if they finish 9-7, I consider that a successful season.

If it comes out that Albert Pujols is involved with steroids, I will be crushed.

I have never seen so much attention for the hiring of an ASSISTANT football coach as I have seen for filling the defensive coordinator position at Georgia.

The NHL ... huh?

Boxing ... huh?

Here is the best way I can describe the current state of the Georgia Tech men's basketball team. If I were a rival coach scouting them, I would leave the game with a blank notebook. I see no system or plan at all from game to game.

I went to 3 college football games this year. The price for tickets at Georgia Tech (and I'm sure many other D1 schools) is absolutely absurd. I took my family of 4 to a game at Furman for less than it costs for ONE Tech ticket and we had a great time. We will be heading back to Greenville again next year.

Thank you for visiting my first post as a blogger. I look forward to many, many more. I have a lot to say!
